The Natural growth co.
Offers premium quality organic
rices ethically sourced &
NGC was created in 1996 and continues to be a family owned company focused on the production of premium quality Thai organic rices. From field-to-fork the best of traditional and modern techniques are used by the hundreds of farmers we work with.
Our philosophy is to promote fair and long-lasting partnerships starting with our farmers through to our millers, truckers and our final customers. At one end, we carry out social initiatives whilst at the other we work hard to ensure customer satisfaction at competitive prices.
There are hundreds of rice varieties and there is no one-way to grow them. The most appropriate technique is determined by topography, soil characteristics, rice type, local beliefs and of course the individuals’ preference and know-how. NGC extension team works closely with on-site inspectors who together monitor the progress of crops, assess agricultural methods and resolve problems faced by our farmer members.
1. Land Preparation
Fields must first be ploughed and tilled in preparation for planting. This was traditionally done by water buffalos but is now largely by tractor. The flooded paddies are then leveled to ensure even distribution of water.
Carefully selected organic seeds are planted in one of two ways: ‘transplanting’ or ‘direct seeding’. Transplanting starts in the nursery beds where seeds are allowed to grow before being manually uprooted and transplanted. ‘Direct seeding’ on the other hand is by broadcasting seeds.
3. Crop Care
During the months to maturity, crops are monitored and managed in accordance with international organic regulations. Agrochemicals are strictly prohibited. Instead weeds, pests, soil-fertility and nutrient content are controlled by a combination of modern and age-old techniques.
Prior to harvest, flooded fields are drained and left to dry. The mature crop is then harvested by hand or by combine harvester. Mature rice kernels are separated from the stalk either by manual threshing or by machine.
The paddy is dried to optimal moisture levels and stored until milling. The milling process starts by removing the husk and further milling removes the coloured bran to reveal the translucent grain within. Rice is then packed and transported to Bangkok for CO₂ fumigation and readied for its next destination.
Environmental & Social Initiatives
NGC socio-environmental initiatives stem from concerns identified by NGC farmer members. Projects are voted on and must gain a majority within the group to become a potential project. We aim to address real problems faced by our farmers and to do so with lasting effect.
